The rail tracks that run along 5&20 and the lakefront property between Geneva and Seneca County is being debated again. For years, there have been on-and-off discussions about what could be done with the line.

The prospect of moving it out of the tourist-centric area completely has come up before.

Councilor Ken Camera, who represents Ward 4, says he’d like to see Geneva City Council take a closer look at the rail yard that blocks views and access of Seneca Lake from the adjoining neighborhoods.

A committee was formed to examine the status of railroad operations on city residents.

“We know we have something we need to do,” Camera said. “There’s plenty of answers that are needed for the community.”

Among the issues being looked at is access to the lake and nearby streets on the other side of the tracks. They are also looking at the tax implications for residents and property values if the tracks are removed.

Officials with Finger Lakes Railway say they would be willing to listen and participate in conversations about what to do with the line and rail yard.
