Bellarmine senior defensive back Thomas Di Vittorio returned an interception 94 yards for a game-winning touchdown against Los Gatos on Friday.
In The Chronicle’s final top 25 rankings until the end of the postseason, Bellarmine made the biggest jump — from No. 11 to 8 — after its stunning 34-27 win Friday at previous No. 5 and undefeated Los Gatos in the first round of the Central Coast Section Division I playoffs.
Los Gatos was driving for what looked like a game-winning score in the final minute when Thomas Di Vittorio returned a tipped pass for a 94-yard pick-six.
This week, Bellarmine travels to West Catholic Athletic League rival and fourth-ranked Serra in the semifinals. The Padres advanced after overcoming overcame five turnovers to defeat Valley Christian, 41-30.
Even with the win, Serra dropped a spot in the rankings because previous No. 4 Pittsburg was so impressive in a 69-7 first-round North Coast Section Open Division win over Amador Valley-Pleasanton.
Wilcox-Santa Clara (7-4) and Cardinal Newman-Santa Rosa (7-3) moved into the rankings after impressive first-round playoff wins. Wilcox defeated Santa Cruz 49-17 to enter at No. 24 while Newman had little trouble with Newark Memorial, winning 56-6 in NCS Division IV play.
Newman should have a much more competitive semifinal game Friday when it plays undefeated Tennyson-Hayward (10-0).
